Youth Groups

Are our students simply children of congregants or are they congregants themselves? At Temple Har Shalom, we absolutely embrace the latter. Our children are not simply here because their parents are members, they’re here because this is their home as well. The question often arises, “What’s the difference between our youth programming and our Religious School – aren’t they both aimed at our children?” While enrollment and continuing education in the Religious School provides an unparalleled base for a student’s Jewish education, non-classroom social and experiential experiences offer another vital component to a child’s connection with their Judaism. Youth Programming provides our young Jewish adults an outlet to forge their own personal, lifelong connections to their Judaism. There are countless numbers of young people who cite their experiences with their Temple Youth Groups as key aspects in developing and maintaining lifelong connections to Judaism. At Temple Har Shalom, our Youth Programming strives to be more than simply an outlet to share in the occasional social outing; we look to make our students realize that they are not just children of congregants, but are congregants themselves! Leadership opportunities, community-wide projects and the forging of lifelong friendships allow us to do our part in raising the next generation of committed Jewish adults.

We find it vital to see our youth groups for what they are: a chance for our kids/students/young Jewish adults to make their own personal, lifelong connections to their Judaism. In order to see our children embrace their heritage, create a real connection to their religion and become the next generation of Reform Jews that we all aspire them to be, we find it necessary to see our youth group as a vital component to this development.

2nd & 3rd Graders

Club Yelad’im, (“Club Children”) meets 4 times throughout the year. Club Yeladim programs are for Temple Har Shalom’s 2nd & 3rd graders. Club Yeladim programs will focus on the main premise of having fun and making friends in a caring and encouraging Jewish environment. Information about our 2017-2018 calendar will be available in September.

4th & 5th Graders

Giva'ot ("Hills") symbolizes the beginning of our children's journey on the road to learning about their Jewishness. The program, which will meet 4 times throughout the year serves as a complement to our accomplished educational programs and allows our kids to see a different side of their community: one based in social events that create an experiential Jewish learning and growing experience. Information about our 2017-2018 calendar will be available in September.

6th, 7th & 8th Graders

For our 6th, 7th & 8th Graders, we offer Club 678. This Youth Group offers awesome activities designed for these students including NFTY-style overnights, Tikkun Olam projects and fun get togethers. In addition to participating in Har Shalom events, 6th, 7th and 8th graders can all participate in specific programs organized by NFTY-GER (our regional youth group). Club 678 leadership opportunities are open to 8th graders. Students interested in helping plan and put on events for their peers can send an email to Jordan Gelber at  Club 678 is a great way to get involved and segue into HSTY.

9th, 10th, 11th & 12th Grades

Har Shalom Temple Youth (known simply as HSTY) is the Temple's largest and most extensive piece of Youth Programming. Comprised of students from 9th - 12th Grades, HSTY's programming includes a wide array of exciting events! Tikkun Olam plays a very large role in connecting students to the larger community with most events throughout the year containing a social action component. HSTY is also a very proud member of the North American Federation of Temple Youth (NFTY), the Union for Reform Judaism's youth arm. Our Regional Youth Group is NFTY-GER, and events are open to HSTY members.
